Every link is usable without paying. Some ask for a free account or keep extras behind a paid tier, and those are labelled.
Italian is one of the most forgiving languages to start: spelling maps predictably onto sound, so you can read aloud correctly from day one, and pronunciation rarely blocks comprehension the way it does in French. That lets you move to real material earlier than usual.
Use that head start on listening. Get a structured course and a good dictionary, but do not wait until you have finished the course to start listening. Italian speech is clear enough that even beginners pick out words, which makes early listening motivating rather than discouraging.
The later difficulties are the subjunctive and the two past tenses, which do not map cleanly onto English. Both are learned by hearing them used correctly hundreds of times, not by studying the rules once. Free Italian material skews toward news, radio and public-domain literature, all of which suit that kind of repeated exposure.

This directory began from a community-built list of free language resources, a year of collecting and checking by Joanna (u/chlebka) and dozens of contributors who suggested links, shared freely. See the original list. We have since expanded, re-checked and re-categorised it, and we keep the per-resource credits where the original list recorded them.
