The 14 basic consonants

Hangul was made in 1443, and each consonant is shaped like the mouth making it.

  • ㄱ giyeok, from the back of the tongue

  • ㄴ nieun, tongue tip behind the teeth

  • ㅁ mieum, lips closed

Practice strokes for ㄱ, ㄴ and ㅁ. The pen follows the stroke order, top to bottom and left to right.

받침, the final consonant

A syllable block can end in a consonant. 밥 (rice) ends in ㅂ, and the sound is held rather than released.

Read 한글 as han-geul. The ㄹ before a vowel is a light tap, closer to a soft d than to an English l.
